Bringing Theraplay Into My Practice: Why Relationships Heal
Relationships are essential for healing.
I recently completed Level One Theraplay training, a child and family therapy model that uses structured play to build strong, healthy attachments. It was a transformative experience, and I’m excited to begin integrating it into my work with children and families.
What is Theraplay?
Theraplay is a relationship-based therapy that uses playful, engaging, and nurturing interactions to strength the caregiver-child connection. Ground in attachment theory and brain development research, it is especially effective for children who have experienced trauma, anxiety or relational disruptions.
Why I Chose Theraplay Over PCIT
While Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a well-researched and effective model for addressing behavioral issues, I found myself drawn to Theraplay because of its core emphasis on relationship and attachment. PCIT focuses primarily on modifying behavior through structured interactions, which can be incredibly helpful for some families. However, Theraplay begins from a different foundation: that healing happens through connection. It’s not just about changing behavior - it’s about restoring the sense of safety, joy, and trust that comes from secure relationship.
Evidence-Based Approach
This belief is backed by decades of research. Studies have shown that infants that were deprived of human touch and emotional connection or attachment had decreased growth rates. Clinically, this is known as a “failure to thrive.” Orphanages in the early 20th-century had high mortality rates of infants until caregivers began providing more physical affection and emotional engagement, i.e. touch and attachment.
These findings reinforce what Theraplay is built on: relationships are not just important - they are vital for survival and healing. And I believe this holds true for all people, no matter their age.
Final Note
I’m thrilled to bring this new approach into my work and look forward to the positive impact it can have on the families I work with. If you’re curious about Theraplay and think it might be a good fit for your child, feel free to reach out!
